2GG: Prime Saga
April 13-14, 2019
La Mirada, CA
Ultimate Singles: 129/804
Ultimate Doubles: 73/150
Squad Strike: 33/135 (despite going 0-1 lol)

Pros
- Free water (with constant refills) is actually amazing
- Other free amenities were sick (parking, charging station, close restrooms)
- Peets + restaurant /bar just a minute walk away is so convenient (+ In n Out 5 minutes away, Starbucks / Wendys ~10 minutes away)
- I didn’t have a room at the hotel, but hotels as venue are always convenient. My carpool and I wanted to save a bit on cash
- Artist Alley is sick
- Free Play room is great
- 24hr venue is godlike
Cons
- Too much on Saturday; not enough on Sunday. Perhaps Squad Strike + Hunters and Pirates could have been moved to Sunday.
- Too early in the meta for a saga? Who are even the Metroid mains in Ultimate lol
- Metroid theme was suppressed by Japan Saga v98127349821.0. These two bullets made it feel like it wasn’t really a saga imo (maybe plus the fact that in the end it’s just a hotel, nothing like an Esports Arena)
- Packed up half the setups in the ballroom on Sunday morning was sadface
- No outside food/drinks was sadface too, but that’s on the hotel rules so oh well
- Could use a bigger room for free play (25ish setups for 800+ people isn’t the best, but understandable that this isn’t a priority). The size was perfect (if not just a pinch too small) for Sunday though, given how little was happening on Sunday for the majority of competitors.
My Experience
- Stayed at an Airbnb about two miles away, which was amazing for its cost
- Airbnb had a monitor, but it was hung on the wall above the closet where it was impossible to attach our Switch, rip
- Intended on competing in the Pre-Prime event, but with work + traffic, my carpool couldn’t make it in time. We ended up grabbing snacks for the weekend, checking into the Airbnb, then going to the venue to play friendlies without paying $15 lol
- Lost my phone somehow on Friday night, but staff found it and I got it back the next morning yay
- Lost my hydroflask somehow on Saturday night. Nobody found it 😦
- 0-1 in Squad Strike vs Armando (AC) lol
- 2-2 in doubles with my partner whom I typically team with at majors OOS, twas fun. DK’s actually not the worst doubles character in the game now lol
- 2-2, getting 129th, one away from making it out of pools. Lost to Stroder (holy wow I died from 0-to-death from Mario just for hitting him with utilt, maybe three times) and a Dedede (MU inexperience + my opponent’s skill completely overwhelmed me). Went all DK.
- Hung out with mainly San Diego players whom I roomed and rode with
- Was actually giving Peach mains advice after beating them with Daisy lol
- For some reason a total of three people asked for my autograph? Why me I’m blushing ;-;
- Sold a few books!
- I love grinding for hours on end, but my body (both physically and mentally) can’t handle that much with Daisy. DK on the other hand…
- Wanted to grind specific MUs but the number of filled rotations made that difficult unfortunately. Ended up playing mostly familiar MUs or with friends.
- Started getting sick on Friday evening (before getting to the venue), lost my voice by Sunday, rip. (I can kind of talk as of today, Monday, though)
- Didn’t fight a single Metroid character at Prime Saga, even in friendlies lol
Overall had a blast! See you guys at the next major 🙂
